Abstract
This thesis explores the theoretical analysis and literature review concerning the green synthesis,
characterization, and environmental applications of metal oxide-based nanocomposites for the
effective removal of complex pollutants from aqueous media. The work is framed within the
context of sustainable nanotechnology and focuses on multifunctional nanocomposite systems
combining metal oxide nanoparticles with biopolymers or magnetic structures to enhance
photocatalytic and adsorptive performance.
Several innovative nanocomposite systems were comprehensively analyzed and evaluated:
1. • MgO@SnO₂/PVP nanocomposites for the adsorption of heavy metals, oil-in-water
(OIW) emulsions, and total suspended solids (TSS) from industrial petroleum wastewater.
2. • Ca/α-Fe₂O₃/ZnO/CuO quaternary nanocomposites for high-efficiency heavy metal
removal from contaminated sludge.
3. • CS/Fe₃O₄ (chitosan-coated) and Ag@Fe₃O₄ nanocomposites for the simultaneous
removal of heavy metals and rapid photodegradation of organic dyes (Methylene Blue and
Rose Bengal).
4. • ZnO@CuO heterojunctions and single metal oxides (α-Fe₂O₃, CuO, ZnO) for the
degradation of total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) and advanced purification of real
petroleum effluents.
All nanomaterials were synthesized using eco-friendly routes, employing natural plant extracts
(Mentha pulegium, Laurus nobilis, Pistacia lentiscus, and Portulaca oleracea) as reducing and
capping agents. Structural, morphological, optical, and surface properties were characterized
using XRD, FTIR, SEM, EDX, UV–Vis spectroscopy, and zeta potential analysis. The
performance of the nanocomposites was evaluated through adsorption and photodegradation
experimental data. Kinetic (pseudo-first and pseudo-second-order) and isotherm (Langmuir
and Freundlich) models were applied to describe the adsorption mechanisms.
