Abstract
Groundwater pumping stations in the Algerian Sahara rely on fixed-speed induction motor drives that impose severe operational constraints: destructive inrush currents at starting, persistent hydraulic mismatch between pump and system characteristics, and energy waste amplified by the cubic relationship between motor speed and shaft power. This thesis investigates the design, simulation, and techno-economic evaluation of a Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) control strategy for the 75 kW submersible pump installation at the University Hub Pumping Station, University Hamma Lakhdar, El Oued, Algeria.
A field diagnostic campaign in March 2026 identified two critical failures in the existing stator-resistance starter: a destructive bypass inrush current of 248 A at the six-second contactor transition, and a chronic hydraulic runout condition at Q = 150 m³/h, 120% of the Best Efficiency Point flow, that degrades pump efficiency to 73% and wire-to-water system efficiency to approximately 60% (Pelec ≈ 59.4 kW).
A MATLAB/Simulink digital twin of the complete motor-inverter-pump system was constructed and validated against the field measurements. Four simulation scenarios comparing the stator-resistance starter with the proposed closed-loop scalar V/f VFD confirm that the VFD eliminates the inrush spike and produces a smooth speed ramp. Reducing the supply frequency from 50 Hz to 44 Hz shifts the operating point to the BEP envelope, recovering pump efficiency to 77.5%.
The annual energy saving of approximately 141,000 kWh yields a monetary saving of approximately 446,000 DZD/year against Sonelgaz Tariff 42. With a capital expenditure of 955,000 DZD, the simple payback period is approximately 2.1 years, with a strongly positive ten-year NPV of +2,038,000 DZD and an IRR of 45.6%. The VFD installation is recommended to eliminate mechanical failures, extend pump service life, and support Algeria’s water-sector energy efficiency objectives.
