Abstract
Given the significant increase in the use of natural products in the field of cosmetics, this
study aims to highlight medicinal plants as safe and effective sources as ingredients for
natural cosmetics. This study focused on two types of desert plants, namely Retama raetam
(Forssk.) Webb. & Berthel. and Calligonum comosum L’ Hér., where the active ingredients in
the studied plants were extracted using appropriate extraction methods and the antioxidant
efficacy of these extracts was evaluated through a set of tests, using DPPH and FRAP tests, in
addition to estimating the total polyphenol content and determining the sun protection factor.

The results indicated significant antioxidant activity, with IC50 values in the DPPH assay
recorded for Retama raetam (262.0723 µg/mL) and Calligonum comosum (35 µg/mL). The
FRAP assay showed reduced power for Retama raetam (1091.75 µg/mL) and Calligonum
comosum (46.60186 µg/mL). The total polyphenol content of the studied plants was estimated
at 277.822 mg EAG/g and 411.1547 mg EAG/g, respectively. The SPF for the studied plants
was recorded at 25.02 and 66.15 respectively.
In the application phase, these extracts were incorporated into a dual-function cosmetic
formulation: a moisturizing and sunscreen cream for daytime use, and a soothing and
nourishing nighttime serum. These formulations demonstrated satisfactory physical and
chemical properties.
These results indicate the potential for utilizing these local plants in the development of
effective natural cosmetic products, particularly in desert environments.
