Abstract

This study is a scientific and engineering response to the most significant challenges facing sustainable agricultural investment in desert environments, as it examines in detail a solar photovoltaic water pumping system designed for irrigation in the Nakhlah region of EL Oued. The study addresses real problems that concern investors in areas isolated from the public grid; most notably, the exorbitant and constantly fluctuating prices of diesel fuel and the maintenance costs of traditional generators, alongside technical challenges such as the impact of high temperatures on panel efficiency, and the difficulty of balancing variable energy production with the constant water needs of potato fields a challenge that often falls into the trap of haphazard design, leading to pump shortages or the waste of massive amounts of excess electricity that go unused, nt to mention the negative environmental impact of carbon emissions. To address this challenge, the research relies on the global simulation software HOMER Pro to model and optimize the system’s operational and financial performance through an in-depth engineering and economic comparison of two options: a fully autonomous battery-backed system and a hybrid system that integrates a diesel generator as a backup source. This study culminates in identifying the optimal configuration that achieves the highest financial viability and technical reliability by reducing the net levelized cost of energy and the cost per kilowatt-hour while ensuring agricultural irrigation, and by providing practical solutions that promote the clean energy transition and protect remote agricultural projects from fluctuations in conventional energy prices.
