Abstract
This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of deep learning techniques in the early detection of breast cancer through the classification of histopathological images into benign and malignant tumors using the BreakHis dataset. To achieve this objective, three advanced deep learning models were employed: InceptionV3, DenseNet-201, and Vision Transformer (ViT). In addition, the impact of several image preprocessing techniques was investigated, namely CLAHE and Stain Normalization, as well as their combination, in order to enhance image quality and improve the classification performance of the models.
The results showed that preprocessing techniques had a positive impact on model performance, where the accuracy of the InceptionV3 model increased from (78.60%) when using raw images to (82.56%) after applying the combined preprocessing approach (CLAHE + Stain Normalization), confirming the effectiveness of these techniques in improving image quality and highlighting important histological features for classification.
The DenseNet-201 model also achieved good performance, reaching an accuracy of approximately (86%), along with high values of Precision, Recall, and F1-Score. This reflects its ability to extract fine-grained histological features and effectively distinguish between benign and malignant tumors.
The Vision Transformer (ViT) model achieved the best results among all tested models, with a classification accuracy of (95.20%). The values of Precision, Recall, and F1-Score were (96.79%), (96.20%), and (96.49%), respectively. In addition, the MCC value reached (88.89%), indicating high performance and strong reliability in classifying breast histopathological images.
These findings highlight the importance of applying image preprocessing techniques to improve the quality of medical images and enhance the performance of deep learning models. They also emphasize the promising potential of the Vision Transformer (ViT) as the most effective model among those studied. Consequently, it can be considered a promising approach for developing intelligent systems to support early breast cancer diagnosis and clinical decision-making.
