Abstract

This study focused on the valorization of fruit and vegetable waste through the preparation of biogels and the evaluation of their chemical properties, as well as the decolorization of aqueous solutions. Agricultural waste, such as fruit and vegetable peels, was chosen as a renewable and environmentally friendly raw material due to its richness in natural biopolymers. The prepared biogels were characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) to identify the main functional groups involved in gel formation and adsorption mechanisms. FTIR analysis confirmed the presence of hydroxyl, carboxyl, and carbonyl groups. The adsorption performance of the synthesized biogels was investigated using methylene blue dye as a typical contaminant. The results showed a gradual decrease in adsorption values and a corresponding increase in removal efficiency with increasing contact time. The adsorption capacities varied among different samples depending on the chemical composition and structural properties of the original biomass. Some samples exhibited higher removal efficiency due to their increased porosity and abundance of active adsorption sites. The results of this study demonstrate the feasibility of efficiently converting fruit and vegetable waste into biodegradable, low-cost biogels with promising potential for wastewater treatment applications. This approach contributes to sustainable waste management, environmental protection, and the development of eco-friendly materials within the framework of sustainable development and environmentally conscious countries.
