Abstract

This work is based on turmeric (Curcuma longa ), a plant belonging to the Zingiberaceae family that has been widely used for centuries in traditional medicine due to its remarkable therapeutic properties. In this study, curcumin, the principal bioactive compound of turmeric, was extracted using an ultrasonicassisted extraction technique, achieving an extraction yield of 11.06%. Curcumin nanocrystals were subsequently prepared and their physicochemical properties were investigated using various analytical techniques. Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) was employed to identify the functional groups present in the samples. Ultraviolet–Visible (UV–Vis) spectroscopy revealed a characteristic absorption maximum at 459.92 nm. X-ray Diffraction (XRD) analysis demonstrated a crystallinity index of 75% and a crystallite size of 3.35 nm, confirming the nanocrystalline nature of the prepared curcumin crystals. High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) was also used to evaluate the purity and chemical composition of the samples.
