Abstract
This study examines how the concepts of ceasefire and responsibility are constructed in two selected episodes of The Guardian Politics Weekly UK podcast about the Gaza ceasefire and its political aftermath. The study aims to explore how political actors, humanitarian issues, and post-war responsibilities are represented in podcast discourse. The study adopts a qualitative approach using Critical Discourse Analysis and framing analysis. The data consists of two podcast episodes published during the Gaza ceasefire negotiations 2023/2024 and their aftermath. The analysis focuses on framing, language choices, agency, omission, and evaluative expressions in the discussion of political responsibility. The findings reveal that the podcast constructs the ceasefire through both humanitarian and political-security frames. While the discourse highlights civilian suffering and destruction, it also presents the ceasefire as a diplomatic and political process connected to negotiations and international actors. The findings also reveal that responsibility is unevenly distributed across the podcast discourse. While retrospective responsibility for past violence is often mitigated or backgrounded, prospective responsibility is foregrounded through references to diplomatic efforts, humanitarian obligations, and future conflict prevention. The study concludes that podcast discourse plays an important role in shaping representations of responsibility, legitimacy, and humanitarian concern in contemporary media discussions of conflict.
