Abstract
This study investigates the construction of American identity and ideology in the diplomatic
speech of U.S. Representative Mike Waltz at the United Nations Security Council regarding the
Gaza crisis on September 23, 2025. Utilizing Norman Fairclough’s three-dimensional Critical
Discourse Analysis model, the research examines the linguistic devices employed in the talk such
as word choice, the use of pronouns and modal verbs. Analysis shows the speech frames the
conflict as a binary opposition of self (U.S. and allies) versus other (Hamas and other adversaries),
using inclusive pronouns to promote a sense of shared responsibility and exclusive pronouns to
pinpoint the opposition. High-obligation modal verbs underscore the moral imperative consistent
with U.S. geopolitical interests. The lexical choices delegitimize the counter actors and multilateral
diplomatic efforts. The results indicate that language is not neutral, but a tool to build ideological
narratives that perpetuate U.S. hegemony in international politics. The paper contributes to
understanding the role of discourse in shaping perceptions and power relations in global diplomatic
arenas, and highlights the importance of linguistic analysis in political communication research.
