Abstract

This work aims to prepare nanoparticles of CuFe₂O₄ and study their ability to remove methylene blue from contaminated water. This compound was selected for its magnetic properties, which allow easy separation from the aqueous medium and enable multiple reuse, making it suitable for water treatment applications. The nanometric particles were prepared using the co-precipitation method, with 6.15 g (0.0308 mol) of copper (II) acetate monohydrate Cu(CH₃COO)₂·H₂O and 10.00 g (0.0616 mol) of anhydrous ferric chloride FeCl₃, along with approximately 11 g (0.27 mol) of sodium hydroxide NaOH to adjust the basic medium and promote the formation of the precipitate. After precipitation, the material was washed several times with distilled water, then dried and calcined to obtain CuFe₂O₄ nanometric particles. Photocatalytic tests demonstrated high efficiency in removing methylene blue, achieving 97.47% removal in less than one hour. Additionally, the particles exhibited good magnetic properties, allowing easy separation with a magnetic field and reuse without significant loss of efficiency. These results indicate that the prepared CuFe₂O₄ nanometric particles represent an effective and promising material for treating water contaminated with organic dyes, with potential applications in various environmental fields in the future.
