Abstract
Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) represent a promising technology for
next-generation wireless networks, where they operate as flexible aerial base
stations capable of providing reliable coverage in areas that conventional
terrestrial infrastructure cannot adequately serve. Due to their elevated altitude,
UAVs benefit from a high probability of line-of-sight (LoS) communication with
ground users, which improves link quality and reduces path loss compared
to ground-based systems. In order to further improve spectral efficiency and
user fairness within UAV communication systems, Non-Orthogonal Multiple
Access (NOMA) can be integrated, allowing multiple users to share the same
time-frequency resources simultaneously through superposition coding at the
transmitter and successive interference cancellation (SIC) at the receiver. In our
work, we analyze the performance of a downlink UAV-assisted NOMA system
serving two ground users – a far user and a near user – over a Nakagami-m
fading channel with a probabilistic path loss model accounting for both LoS and
non-line-of-sight (NLoS) propagation conditions. We simulate the performance
of the considered system in terms of capacity, Bit Error Rate (BER) and
Outage Probability (OP) using MATLAB, while also investigating the effect of
power allocation coefficients, modulation order, and cell radius on overall system
behavior. Furthermore, we extend the analysis to examine the impact of the
Nakagami fading parameter m, UAV altitude, and propagation environment
type (Rural, Suburban, Urban, and Dense Urban) on system performance,
providing a comprehensive characterization of the system across a wide range of
realistic operating conditions. The simulation results show that the UAV-NOMA
system outperforms conventional OMA in terms of outage probability and
spectral efficiency, confirming that the combination of UAV communications and
NOMA represents an effective and viable solution for next-generation wireless
communication systems.
