Abstract
Synchronous Reluctance Motors (SynRMs) are increasingly utilized in high-performance
drive systems due to their simple structure, high efficiency, and absence of permanent
magnets; however, their control is challenging because of nonlinear behavior and significant
parameter variations, particularly inductance changes caused by magnetic saturation.
Conventional model-based control methods, including sliding mode control (SMC), depend
on accurate system modeling, which limits their performance under uncertainties and
disturbances. To overcome these limitations, this thesis proposes a novel model-free sliding
mode control strategy based on a recurrent neural network (RNN-SMC), where the RNN is
employed to learn and estimate the system dynamics online without requiring prior
knowledge of motor parameters. In this approach, the equivalent control component is
generated using the neural network approximation, while the discontinuous control term
ensures robustness against external disturbances and model uncertainties. The integration of
RNN with SMC enhances adaptability, reduces chattering, and improves tracking accuracy.
The effectiveness of the proposed method is validated through simulation under various
operating conditions, including parameter variations and load disturbances, demonstrating
superior dynamic performance, reduced steady-state error, and enhanced robustness compared
to conventional model-based SMC strategies, thereby confirming the potential of the
proposed approach for reliable and high-performance control of SynRM drives.
