Abstract
The red meat sector in Algeria represents the primary source of agricultural revenue. In 2021,
national production reached approximately 537,000 tons, providing an average of 12.04 kg per
person per year, which is significantly below the global average of 34 kg per person per year.
To address this situation, the Algerian authorities launched a national program in 2010
through ALVIAR (Algérienne des Viandes Rouges) to modernize the red meat sector. The program
aimed to restructure farms, develop infrastructure, regulate the market, and strengthen health
control.
Despite completing most of the investments by 2022, the program failed to achieve its
planned objectives. Today, the red meat sector in Algeria faces numerous challenges, including the
relatively low national production that remains insufficient to meet domestic demand, high red meat
prices, weak linkage between production and processing, inadequate health monitoring, public
sector complexities, heavy reliance on imports, and the absence of a strategic plan capable of
adapting to challenges.
These obstacles highlight the urgent need for structural reforms and better coordination
among all stakeholders to ensure self-sufficiency and secure national red meat supplies. Such
measures are essential to improve the nutritional situation of Algerian citizens and reduce
dependency on foreign sources for red meat.
