This Master's dissertation presents an analytical thermo-hydrodynamic evaluation of nanolubricant performance in laminar lubrication flows within an inclined slider bearing. The study aims to assess whether the addition of nanoparticles to a conventional SAE10 mineral oil can improve bearing performance while minimizing frictional and thermal penalties. Three oxide nanoparticles were investigated: aluminum oxide (Al₂O₃), copper oxide (CuO), and titanium dioxide (TiO₂), at volume concentrations ranging from 0 to 4 vol.%, with a reference concentration of 2.0 vol.% used for the parametric analyses. The nanolubricants were modeled as homogeneous single-phase effective fluids, and their effective properties (viscosity, density, specific heat, and thermal conductivity) were determined as functions of nanoparticle type and concentration. The main quantitative results under fixed-load operating conditions (W = 3000 N, N = 3000 rpm, φ = 2.0 vol.%) revealed that the minimum film thickness increased by 8.5%, 12.2%, and 15.8% for Al₂O₃, CuO, and TiO₂, respectively, compared with the base oil (h₂ = 7.26 μm). However, the friction force increased by 7.1%, 10.8%, and 14.2%, respectively. In addition, the bulk outlet temperature rise (ΔT₍b₎) increased from 8.5°C for the base oil to 9.1°C, 9.5°C, and 9.8°C for Al₂O₃, CuO, and TiO₂, respectively. The results indicate that TiO₂ nanoparticles provide the greatest improvement in film thickness but also generate the highest energy and thermal penalties. In contrast, Al₂O₃ offers the most balanced overall performance, with a moderate film-thickness enhancement (8.5%) and the lowest increase in friction force (7.1%), making it the most suitable nanoparticle under the investigated operating conditions. The study demonstrates that nanolubricants should be evaluated through a comprehensive thermo-hydrodynamic analysis, as improved thermal conductivity alone is insufficient to offset the additional heat generated by viscosity-induced frictional effects.
