| dc.description.abstract | This dissertation explores the relationship between art, liberty, and political activism through an examination of Nina Simone’s engagement in the American Civil Rights Movement. As a prominent African American singer, pianist, and songwriter, Simone transformed her artistic practice into a powerful medium through which she expressed anger, resistance, racial pride, and the desire for social and political freedom. Although her career encompassed different musical genres and artistic influences, her work became increasingly connected to the struggles of African Americans during one of the most significant periods of social transformation in twentieth-century American history. The study focuses particularly on the ways in which Simone’s music reflects the realities of racial discrimination, segregation, violence, identity, and the struggle for equality. Through a close reading of selected songs, including ( Mississippi Goddam) ,( Four Women), (To Be Young), (Gifted and Black), and( I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel to Be Free) , this research investigates how musical expression can function as a form of protest and political communication. It also examines the relationship between Simone’s personal experiences as a Black woman and her development as an outspoken artistic activist. Furthermore, this dissertation considers the role of African American identity and gender in Simone’s artistic discourse. Her music does not simply call for legal or political equality; it also challenges stereotypes and demands recognition of Black dignity, history, and cultural identity. In this sense, Simone’s artistic production illustrates how music can create a space in which personal experience and collective struggle intersect. The dissertation argues that Nina Simone’s contribution to the Civil Rights Movement should be understood not only through her participation in political events but also t hrough the transformative power of her artistic work. Her songs converted emotions such as anger, frustration, pride, and hope into forms of cultural resistance. Consequently, Simone’s legacy demonstrates that art can become an instrument of political consciousness and a means of imagining and demanding liberty. | |
