The raw material sources and reducing processing costs for silica production remain among the most significant challenges facing researchers nowadays. This study aims to evaluate the feasibility of utilizing two widely available natural resources in El Oued Province, Algeria, namely sand rose and aquifer sand, as local sources for preparing amorphous silica using a sol-gel method. To achieve this, the raw materials and extracted silica were characterized using various techniques, including X-ray fluorescence (XRF), conductivity measurement, surface properties (BET), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). The XRF analysis revealed the presence of silica in both samples, with an SiO₂ content of approximately 87.95% in the aquifer sand and only 1.208% in the sand rose. XRD and FT-IR results confirmed the presence of silica in the form of quartz, with the appearance of sharp, distinct peaks at 2θ = 26.65° and 1082 cm⁻¹, respectively. Following extraction, the results showed that amorphous silica was obtained from the aquifer sand, characterized by a low electrical conductivity of 2.7 μS/cm and a specific surface area of 485.2 m²/g. The XRD pattern also revealed a broad, centered band at 2θ = 22.6°, further confirming the amorphous nature of the extracted silica. These results indicate that sand rose is an unsuitable source for silica extraction due to its low silica content and limited extraction yield, while aquifer sand represents a promising and attractive local source of silica, both in its crystalline form as quartz and in its amorphous form after extraction, making it a potential feedstock for numerous industrial applications.
