| dc.description.abstract | This study aimed to highlight the role of dietary supplements, particularly herbal supplements, in supporting respiratory health and alleviating certain respiratory diseases, including bronchitis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and COVID-19. This study was conducted in the Province of Touggourt, Algeria, using a questionnaire distributed equally among physicians (including general practitioners and respiratory/chest disease specialists) and pharmacists, with 50% of respondents from each group. The aim was to collect data on their knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding the use of dietary supplements in supporting respiratory health and preventing related diseases. The findings revealed a generally positive perception of dietary supplements and medicinal plants as complementary therapeutic approaches. Among the medicinal plants cited by participants, thyme was identified as one of the most frequently recommended species due to its reported anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and expectorant properties. The results also indicated that healthcare professionals were aware of the potential risks associated with dietary supplements, particularly drug–supplement interactions and inappropriate use without medical supervision. $These findings underscore the growing interest in integrating dietary supplements into respiratory healthcare while highlighting the importance of evidence-based practice. The study emphasizes the need to strengthen awareness programs and professional training for healthcare providers, as well as to encourage further clinical and experimental research to better understand the mechanisms of action, efficacy, and safety of dietary supplements used in respiratory health. | |
