Abstract

Groundwater is the primary and only source for various uses in the Wadi Souf Oasis. However, the continuous and irrational exploitation led to water scarcity and a noticeable decrease in the water level, which resulted in several environmental and other problems in various sectors, especially the agricultural sector, in which a deterioration in the traditional irrigation system (Ghout) was observed. This work aims to develop appropriate solutions for the development of water resources in the region of Wadi Souf, which suffers from drought. Among these solutions, strategies have been developed to reduce the demand for water, such as choosing plants tolerant of drought and salinity, using modern irrigation methods and searching for alternatives to water resources, such as exploiting treated wastewater.
