Abstract

This paper explores the role of phonemic orthography in preserving the Quran’s linguistic integrity amidst the ongoing fragmentation of Arabic due to the presence of diglossia, rise of nationalism, and natural language change. It examines how the divergence between Classical Arabic (CA), Modern Standard Arabic (MSA), and vernacular dialects creates challenges for Quranic comprehension . This paper also argues that the phonemic consistency of Arabic writing ensures the accurate transmission of Quranic recitation. Drawing on historical parallels with Bible translations, the study highlights the resistance to translating the Quran into vernaculars, emphasizing the theological and phonological factors that safeguard its original form. The research also considers the emergence of Educated Standard Arabic (ESA) as a potential future direction for Arabic, the linguistic risks that nationalistic sentiments wreaks and the implications of language evolution for future Quranic accessibility. Ultimately, it argues that while the pronunciation of the Quran is likely to remain stable, its comprehension may necessitate alternative strategies, such as vernacular-based interpretations in order to maintain its meaning across generations.
