Digital Diasporas and Cosmic Freedom: Afrofuturist Imaginations in Nnedi Okorafor’s Binti

Abstract

تتناول هذه الدراسة ثلاثية بينتي لننيدي أوكورافور بوصفها سردية إفريقية مستقبلية تعيد تصور الهوية، والشتات، والتكنولوجيا، والآخرية، والفاعلية النسوية من خلال رحلة فتاة شابة من قبيلة الهيمبا إلى الفضاء. أُنجزت هذه الدراسة لإظهار أن انتقال بينتي إلى ما وراء الأرض ليس رحلة جسدية فقط، بل هو أيضاً عملية معقدة من التحول الثقافي واكتشاف الذات. وتهدف الدراسة إلى تحليل كيفية تقديم الثلاثية للهوية بوصفها هجينة، ومتغيرة، ومتشكلّة عبر اللقاءات مع ثقافات وأنواع وعوالم تكنولوجية مختلفة. تعتمد الدراسة على منهج نوعي تحليلي قائم على التحليل النصي القريب لمقاطع مختارة من الثلاثية. كما تستند إلى منظورات نظرية ملائمة من الدراسات الثقافية، والهجنة ما بعد الاستعمارية، والأفروفيوتشرزم، والأفريكانفيوتشرزم، والنقد النسوي. وتُظهر النتائج الرئيسة أن بينتي لا تتخلى عن هويتها الهيمباوية، بل تحملها إلى فضاءات كونية وتكنولوجية جديدة. كما تتحدى الثلاثية التصورات القائمة على الخوف من الآخر من خلال التأكيد على التواصل، والاعتراف، والتعايش. وأخيراً، تكشف تحولات بينتي عن فاعلية نسوية لأنها تصبح وسيطة، وناجية، وصاحبة قرار. وتخلص الدراسة إلى أن بينتي تقدم رؤية قوية للهوية الإفريقية بوصفها هوية مرنة، وهجينة، وقادرة على تشكيل عوالم مستقبلية دون أن تفقد جذورها الثقافية.

This study examines Nnedi Okorafor’s Binti: The Complete Trilogy as an Africanfuturist narrative that reimagines identity, diaspora, technology, otherness, and female agency through the journey of a young Himba girl into space. The study was carried out to show that Binti’s movement beyond Earth is not only a physical journey, but also a complex process of cultural transformation and self-discovery. It aims to analyze how the trilogy presents identity as hybrid, changing, and shaped by encounters with different cultures, species, and technological worlds. The research adopts a qualitative analytical approach based on close textual analysis of selected passages from the trilogy. It also relies on relevant theoretical perspectives from cultural studies, postcolonial hybridity, Afrofuturism, Africanfuturism, and feminist criticism. The main results show that Binti does not abandon her Himba identity; rather, she carries it into new cosmic and technological spaces. The trilogy also challenges fear-based views of the other by emphasizing communication, recognition, and coexistence. Finally, Binti’s transformation reveals female agency because she becomes a mediator, survivor, and decision-maker. The study concludes that Binti offers a powerful vision of African identity as resilient, hybrid, and capable of shaping future worlds without losing its cultural roots.
