| dc.description.abstract | "This thesis addresses the path-tracking problem for autonomous vehicles by proposing a Curvature-Aware Model Predictive Control (CAMPC) framework optimized using Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO). Conventional MPC controllers rely on fixed, manually tuned weighting parameters, which often result in suboptimal performance when operating under different road geometries and driving conditions. To improve tracking accuracy and control stability, the proposed CAMPC incorporates road curvature information directly into the prediction model and cost function. The MPC weighting parameters are optimized offline using PSO within the CARLA simulation environment. During the optimization process, candidate weight sets are evaluated through repeated closed-loop simulations, where a cost function combining trajectorytracking errors and control effort is minimized. The resulting optimal weight vector is then stored and employed by the MPC controller during real-time operation. The proposed framework is evaluated in CARLA using three trajectories of increasing complexity, including a roundabout, a multi-curve route, and a long curvy road. The performance of the optimized CAMPC is compared with that of a conventional PID controller. Experimental results show that the proposed approach significantly improves trajectory-tracking performance, reducing maximum cross-track error by 51–61%, maximum heading error by 85–86%, and average speed error by 22–31%. In addition, the optimized controller decreases braking effort and eliminates steering oscillations, resulting in smoother and more stable vehicle behavior. These results demonstrate that PSO-based offline optimization provides an effective method for selecting MPC weighting parameters and enables robust path tracking for autonomous driving applications.
