| dc.description.abstract | Along with an increase in demand for wireless data services and advancements toward 5G and beyond, the demand for spectrally efficient and reliable communication systems rises. Multiplexing and diversity gain enabled through multiple antennas can help satisfy this demand through the use of Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO). Unfortunately, the efficiency of MIMO systems critically depends on Channel State Information (CSI), which is difficult to extract in practice due to the effects of Rayleigh fading and additive noise. Typically, the process of estimating CSI involves algorithms based on mathematical models and uses pilot symbols. Even though those methods are relatively simple and effective in terms of computational cost, they often demonstrate poor performance when used at low SNRs or when there is a discrepancy between actual channel behavior and modeling assumptions. In order to improve on existing techniques, a Deep Learning (DL)-based channel estimation technique for 2×2 MIMO communication over Rayleigh fading channel with additive white Gaussian noise is proposed in this work. The problem is set up as a regression learning problem in which a fully connected Residual Deep Neural Network (DNN) is trained on pilot sequences in order to learn the relationship between pilot sequences and channel parameters. Python programming language was used to implement the approach within the Google Colab environment; synthesized data was generated for various SNRs. MSE is used as the measure of performance in comparison with the Least Squares (LS) estimator. Simulations show better MSE results achieved by DL in most cases, especially in situations of low and moderate SNRs. Therefore, deep learning shows promising results as a potential CSI estimation technique in intelligent communication systems.
