Abstract

The terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, disrupted not only New York’s physical landscape but also the ways individuals narrate and understand catastrophic experience. Don DeLillo’s Falling Man (2007) explores this crisis of representation by portraying trauma as fragmented, belated, and resistant to complete narration. Drawing on Cathy Caruth’s theory of trauma, this paper examines storytelling as an ongoing process of encountering and negotiating the human aftermath of catastrophe. Through close textual analysis of the novel’s nonlinear structure, recurring imagery, strategic silences, and the symbolic “Falling Man” performance, the paper argues that storytelling does not provide narrative closure or recovery but instead enables survivors to negotiate memory, identity, and human connection. Ultimately, Falling Man presents storytelling as a fragile ethical and existential practice through which individuals confront the enduring effects of trauma and reconstruct meaning in the post-9/11 world.
