| dc.description.abstract | Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy is among the most widely employed analytical techniques in materials science and chemical engineering, yet the workflow connecting raw spectral data to publication-ready scientific interpretation remains largely manual, timeconsuming, and dependent on specialist expertise. This thesis presents the design, implementation, and experimental validation of SPECTRA AI, an intelligent desktop assistant developed in Python that automates the principal steps of FTIR spectral analysis within a single accessible graphical user interface. The system integrates a prominence-based automated peak detection algorithm implemented through the SciPy signal processing library, an interactive spectral visualisation engine built on Matplotlib, and an AI-powered scientific report generation module connected to the Google Gemini large language model via REST API. A structured prompt engineering methodology was developed to elicit journal-conformant Results and Discussion text following the stylistic conventions of Elsevier materials science publications, with IUPAC vibrational nomenclature and citation placeholder integration. The tool was validated against published peer-reviewed FTIR spectra of three nanomaterial systems of contrasting spectral complexity: biosynthesised Ag/AgCl nanoparticles, CuO@Tocopherol hybrid nanoparticles, and ZnO/BaMg₂ mixed-oxide nanoparticles. Validation results demonstrated a 100% recall of all labelled reference absorption bands across the three case studies, with an overall mean positional error below 15 cm⁻¹ and sub-resolution accuracy of 3.7 cm⁻¹ on sharp, well-defined features. The system exports results in multiple formats including plain text, Excel spreadsheet, and formatted Microsoft Word document embedding the annotated spectrum, the AI-generated discussion, and a structured peak assignment table. A business model and operational plan for commercial deployment of the tool are presented as an annex. The work demonstrates that the integration of established signal processing algorithms with modern generative artificial intelligence constitutes a viable, practically valuable, and deployable approach to reducing the analytical burden of routine FTIR characterisation in academic research and industrial quality control environments. | |
