Fault diagnosis in oil-immersed power transformers is essential for ensuring the reliability and continuity of electrical power systems. While dissolved gas analysis (DGA) represents one of the most effective condition monitoring techniques, traditional interpretation methods often suffer from limited diagnostic accuracy due to overlapping fault regions and insufficient feature representation. This thesis proposes a systematic comparative framework that evaluates two distinct feature extraction strategies derived from DGA data, namely ratio-based features and graphical features, in combination with state-of-the-art artificial intelligence classifiers to address these limitations. The research investigates four machine learning algorithms — K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN), Support Vector Machine (SVM), Random Forest (RF), and RUSBoost — applied to a dataset of 407 samples distributed across six fault categories: partial discharge (PD), low-energy discharge (D1), high-energy discharge (D2), and thermal faults (T1, T2, T3). Ratio-based features are derived from established gas ratio methods, while graphical features are constructed from visual diagnostic representations including the Duval Triangle and related geometric techniques. Both feature sets are systematically evaluated using a comprehensive set of performance metrics, including accuracy, precision, recall, F1-score, Matthews Correlation Coefficient (MCC), and Cohen’s Kappa. The experimental results demonstrate that graphical feature representation consistently outperforms ratio-based features across all tested classifiers, raising the average diagnostic accuracy from 77.25% to 93.85%, corresponding to an overall improvement of 16.60%. The most substantial gains are observed for KNN and SVM, with accuracy improvements of 31.15% and 28.69% respectively, confirming that graphical features produce a more geometrically separable feature space. These findings establish that feature engineering plays a decisive role in transformer fault diagnosis performance, often surpassing the influence of classifier selection itself, and provide a robust foundation for intelligent predictive maintenance systems in power transformers.
