The Pivotal Role Of Central Bank Digital Currencies (cbdcs)

Abstract

This study looks at how they can help achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by showing connections between CBDC features and SDG targets. Well-designed CBDCs can improve development outcomes. In countries focused on financial inclusion, CBDCs with tiered identity verification could raise adult access to financial services by 15 to 20%. In areas seeking better governance, CBDCs may reduce illicit financial activities by 5 to 10%. Additionally, they can improve the efficiency of social benefit programs by 30 to 45%. The study suggests a “Governance by Design” framework to embed sustainable development goals in CBDC architecture. It reviews design approaches in countries like China, Nigeria, Sweden, and the Bahamas, noting risks and offering solutions. A well-governed CBDC can promote a fairer and more transparent financial system. The study ends with recommendations for policymakers to tackle challenges and enhance outcomes.
