Abstract

This article examines the state of food security in Algeria in light of weak domestic production and the country’s growing reliance on global markets to meet its essential food needs, especially during times of crisis. It adopts a descriptive and analytical approach, drawing on international indicators such as the Global Food Security Index (GFSI), the FAO Food Price Index (FFPI), and the Global Supply Chain Pressure Index (GSCPI), along with national data on production, consumption, and imports. The study reveals that global crises—such as the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russia– Ukraine war—have exacerbated the vulnerability of Algeria’s food system due to disrupted supply chains and rising prices. The article concludes with the need for a comprehensive national strategy focused on supporting domestic production, improving storage and distribution infrastructure, and diversifying trade partners to ensure more stable and resilient food security in the face of global challenges.
