Abstract

This study aims to analyze the state of food security in Algeria and its evolution over the past two decades, by relying on relevant global indicators and national strategies, with the objective of assessing the progress achieved in this field. The study adopts a descriptive-analytical approach, drawing on quantitative data obtained from specialized international reports. The findings reveal a decline in Algeria’s Global Hunger Index (GHI) score from a moderate to a low level of hunger, along with an improvement in its Global Food Security Index (GFSI) score. This reflects the impact of agricultural strategies and plans implemented since the early 2000s in supporting domestic production and improving sectoral infrastructure. Nevertheless, achieving sustainable food security continues to face several structural and climatic challenges, which calls for the development of more integrated and effective policies to enhance the resilience of the national food system.
