We Communicate Metaphorically " A Study In Popular Proverbs"

Abstract

Cognitivism is one of the linguistic approaches that concentrates on studying language through mental activities. Leading scholars in this field are; Lakoff and Johnson, who distinguished between two types of concepts: sensory concepts and abstract ones, which we can only identify when it is related to one another. This perspective led to the adoption of metaphor as a tool for understanding these concepts, shifting the view of metaphor from merely a linguistic phenomenon to a conceptual cognitive mechanism with a perceptual nature, represented in the expressions individuals use in their communications. One of the discourses that demonstrate the centrality of figurative metaphors is proverbs, which are founded on a conceptual metaphor that seeks to comprehend life events by establishing comparisons between an accepted conceptual domain and a new, unfamiliar one, relying on the level of conventionality. This leads us to question, What is the relationship between proverbs and figurative metaphors?

عتبر العرفانية من الاتجاهات اللسانية، التي تهتم بدراسة اللغة، من خلال الأنشطة الذهنية، من أبرز الباحثين في هذا المجال (لا يكوف وجونسن) الذين ميّزا بين صنفين من التصورات، تصورات حسية، وأخرى مجردة، لا نستطيع تحديدها إلا إذا تعالقت معها، وهذا ما دفع إلى اعتماد الاستعارة لفهمها؛ وعليه تغيرت النظرة إلى الاستعارة، من كونها ظاهرة لغوية، إلى كونها آلية مفاهيمية عرفانية، ذات طبيعة تصورية، تتجسد من خلال ما يتلفظ به الفرد أثناء تواصلاته، ومن بين الخطابات التي تبرهن على محورية الاستعارات التصويرية، الأمثال الشعبية، التي تتأسس على شكل استعارة تصورية، تقوم على فهم الوقائع الحياتية، انطلاقا من إقامة تقابلات بين مجال تصوري مسلَّم به، وآخر جديد غير مألوف، واعتمادا على درجة التواضعية. إذن ما علاقة الأمثال الشعبية بالاستعارات التصويرية؟

Le cognitivisme est l'une des approches linguistiques qui se concentre sur l'étude du langage à travers les activités mentales. Les principaux chercheurs dans ce domaine sont Lakoff et Johnson, qui ont distingué deux types de concepts : les concepts sensoriels et les concepts abstraits, que nous ne pouvons identifier que lorsqu'ils sont liés les uns aux autres. Cette perspective a conduit à l'adoption de la métaphore comme un outil pour comprendre ces concepts, faisant passer la métaphore d'un simple phénomène linguistique à un mécanisme cognitif conceptuel de nature perceptive, représenté dans les expressions que les individus utilisent dans leurs communications. Un des discours qui démontre la centralité des métaphores figuratives est celui des proverbes, qui sont fondés sur une métaphore conceptuelle cherchant à comprendre les événements de la vie en établissant des comparaisons entre un domaine conceptuel accepté et un domaine nouveau, inconnu, en se basant sur le niveau de conventionnalité. Cela nous amène à poser la question : quelle est la relation entre les proverbes et les métaphores figuratives ?
