Abstract

This study aims to emphasize the role of economic integration within the framework of new regionalism as a mechanism for promoting development, particularly in light of current global challenges such as various crises and shifts in the balance of economic power. The study raises a central question: to what extent can new regionalism—with its inherent flexibility, multiplicity of actors, and diversity of fields—effectively contribute to achieving development for integration member states? By analyzing the conceptual evolution of new regionalism and comparing it with the traditional model of integration, then examining the case of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP), the study reached several key findings. Chief among them is that new regionalism represents a qualitative shift in the methodology of economic integration. Moreover, modern regional agreements, especially the RCEP, constitute flexible and effective models for addressing developmental disparities and transboundary challenges—provided they are supported by a strategic vision, clear political will, and capable institutions for coordination and implementation. This makes new regionalism a genuine lever for development rather than a mere theoretical framework.
